Envoûtement and Mokavéli, the two new infused rums at 49%

Two bottles join our 49% vol range: Envoûtement, a hazelnut rum that brings together hazelnut, walnut and ginger, and Mokavéli, a coffee rum built around rooibos. Both are rum-based spirit drinks, available as a 500 ml bottle at 48 € and as a 50 ml vial at 9 €. Here is what goes into each one, and what you find on the palate.

Two infused rums, one family

Envoûtement and Mokavéli are infused rums, like the rest of our range. Their base is a rum, to which plants, nuts or coffee are added, using an infusion technique we developed ourselves and do not disclose. They are not arranged rums, and we have explained what separates the two in arranged rum or infused rum, what really changes.

Their sales name is "spirit drink". The reason is regulatory: in Europe, a rum may not be flavoured. As soon as anything else is infused into it, the product leaves the "rum" category and becomes a rum-based spirit drink. The starting rum still matters as much as what is infused into it, and the difference between the main families of rum is set out in our article rhum agricole or molasses rum.

The two bottles join the collection of infused rums at 49% vol, alongside Valse Vaudou, Rictus Frénétique and L'Antidote du Joker.

Envoûtement, the hazelnut rum

Ingredients: rum, rooibos, honeybush, ginger, hazelnut, walnut, elderflowers.

The hazelnut is the fruit of the hazel tree (Corylus avellana), the walnut that of the walnut tree (Juglans regia). Rooibos (Aspalathus linearis) and honeybush (genus Cyclopia) are two South African shrubs whose leaves and stems are used. The black elder (Sambucus nigra) contributes its flowers, and ginger its rhizome.

On the palate, hazelnut and walnut lay the foundation. Honeybush and elderflowers bring notes reminiscent of pear. Let us be clear, because the question comes up: there is no pear in Envoûtement. The impression comes from the way the plants in the recipe work together, which is why we speak of a pear and hazelnut profile. Ginger arrives on the finish, and the finish is long.

Allergens: Envoûtement contains nuts (hazelnut, walnut). It is not suitable for people with a nut allergy.

Mokavéli, the coffee rum

Ingredients: rum, rooibos, coffee, marigold flowers.

Coffee is the roasted seed of the coffee plant (genus Coffea). Marigold (Calendula officinalis) is an orange flower grown in European gardens, and the rooibos is the same as in Envoûtement: apart from the rum, it is the only ingredient the two bottles share.

On the palate, coffee brings roasted depth, rooibos rounds it out and the marigold flowers add a discreet floral touch. The whole recalls a cappuccino. Yet there is no milk and no dairy product of any kind in the bottle: the impression comes solely from the way coffee, rooibos and rum work together.

Nor is it a coffee liqueur. Mokavéli remains a dry spirit at 49% vol, without the syrupy side of a liqueur. Its ingredients are limited to the four listed above: no hazelnut, no walnut.

Side by side

  • Strength: 49% vol for both.
  • Common ground: rooibos, present in both recipes.
  • Envoûtement: nuts, ginger, honeybush and elder. Notes of pear and hazelnut, long finish.
  • Mokavéli: coffee, rooibos and marigold. Roasted notes, a cappuccino impression, dry profile.
  • Allergens: nuts (hazelnut, walnut) in Envoûtement; no nuts among Mokavéli's ingredients.
  • Sizes: 500 ml at 48 € or 50 ml vial at 9 €, for both.
  • Sales name: spirit drink; compound terms "rum - hazelnut and walnut" and "rum - coffee".

How to taste them

Both are tasted neat, lightly chilled or over an ice cube. Pour a small amount, 2 to 3 cl, into a glass that narrows towards the top, which concentrates the aromas towards the nose.

At 49% vol, an ice cube makes sense: as it melts, it lowers the strength and releases aromas the alcohol was masking. Choose a single large ice cube over several small ones, which melt too quickly. The most telling approach is still to taste a first sip neat, then add the ice cube and follow how it changes.

If you taste both, start with Envoûtement and finish with Mokavéli: a roasted profile marks the palate for longer and would make the next one harder to read. Their profiles, nuts for one, coffee for the other, place them quite naturally at the end of a meal.

Temperature, glass, tasting order: all these settings are covered in how to taste an infused rum.

Tasting them before choosing a bottle

Each one comes in a 50 ml vial, enough to form an opinion before moving to the 500 ml. The vial is selected directly in the selector on the product page.

You can also taste them with us, at the greenhouse in Francheville, in the Jura. We organise guided tastings of our infused rums for groups of 5 to 9 people, restricted to adults.

Frequently asked questions

Is there pear in Envoûtement?
No. Its ingredients are rum, rooibos, honeybush, ginger, hazelnut, walnut and elderflowers. The notes reminiscent of pear come from the honeybush and the elderflowers.

Is there milk in Mokavéli?
No, no dairy product at all. The cappuccino taste is a tasting impression, born of the way coffee, rooibos and rum work together.

Which one contains allergens?
Envoûtement contains nuts (hazelnut, walnut). Mokavéli's ingredients (rum, rooibos, coffee, marigold flowers) do not include nuts.

Why "spirit drink" and not "rum"?
Because European regulations prohibit flavouring a rum. A rum into which plants, nuts or coffee have been infused becomes a rum-based spirit drink. This is the case for all our infused rums.
